Google Calendar account setup recommendations

Review and set the various settings. In particular:

  • Notifications. Click on Settings in the top right corner. Click the Notifications tab. Turn on email notifications for all invitations and reminders.

Update Microsoft Outlook with a Google event

The Good News - Google Calendar send event invitations and reminder to you via email in the form of a text message with a calendar ICS attachment. Simply double-click the ICS attachment to add the event to Outlook or other supporting software on your PC.

The Bad News - There is no straightforward way to get such an event notice with attachment when you create or join an event. There are two workarounds

  1. Invite yourself. Open the event and send the invitation to a different email address of yours (not the address where your Google account is registered.)
  2. Set up a reminder. The disadvantage with reminders is that they're not sent immediately, but at the appropriate reminder time. NOTE - Reminders only work if the reminder time hasn't already passed!
